Rain Shortens DePaul Invitational
Saturday, September 24, 2005
Rains came and washed away the conclusion of the DePaul Invitational on Saturday afternoon, but some matches were played throughout the weekend.

Doubles play was completed with Valpo's teams all winning at least two matches. In the A Flight, Whitney Chada (Downers Grove, Ill./North H.S.) and Kate Evangelist (Glen Ellyn, Ill./Glenbard West H.S.) dropped their first match, as did Rachel Janseen (Fort Wayne, Ind./Dwenger H.S.) and Jill Dierberg (Saint Louis, Mo./Lutheran South H.S.). Both duos face teams from Northern Illinois in the second and third matches, and both came away victorious. Chada and Evangelist were 8-4 and 8-2 victors while Janssen and Dierberg won by scores of 9-8 and 8-4.

In the B Flight, Kim Sajevic (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury H.S.) and Molly Keifer (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) advanced to the finals before falling 8-3 to a combined team. The duo downed the College of DuPage 8-1 in the first round and DePaul 8-4 in the semifinals. Charmaine Stanislaw (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville H.S.) and Jenny Schwartz (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora H.S.) finished third in the flight. They were 8-1 winners over DuPage, dropped a match to the combined team, and then defeated DePaul in the third place match.

In singles action, play barely got halfway through the draws. In the A Flight, Janssen and Dierberg both dropped first round matches before play was stopped. In the B Flight, Evangelist and Chada both lost their first matches before splitting the second match. Evangelist won 6-0, 6-1 against Cristina Vlase of Chicago State while Chada dropped her match to Megan Brooks of Northern Illinois.

In the C Flight, Stanislaw won her first match 6-1, 6-2 before her tournament was over because of rain. Schwartz was a 6-0, 6-1 winner as was Sajevic in the first round. In the semifinals, Sajevic downed her teammate 6-3, 6-0 to advance to the championship, which was never played.

The D Flight saw Keifer advance to the finals with 6-0, 6-1 and 6-1, 6-3 wins but was not able to finish her tournament.

Valpo will conclude its fall slate on Wednesday with a 3 p.m. match at the University of Chicago.
