Valparaiso stepped out of Horizon League action on Monday afternoon but dropped a non-conference match to Chicago State 5-2 in Chicago, Ill.
Sophomore Christine Antrobus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead H.S.) and freshman Laura Lawson (Thorntown, Ind./Western Boone H.S.) combined for all of the Brown and Gold’s victories on the afternoon.
Antrobus registered a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Ameena Payne at fifth singles while Lawson cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 triumph against Nia Randall at the sixth spot in the lineup.
Chicago State (3-8) won at each of the top four singles positions. Dian Mayasari defeated Kim Sajevic (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury H.S.) 6-1, 6-0 at the top of the lineup while Golda Rubina downed Jenny Schwartz (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora H.S.) 6-0, 6-2 at second singles. Yosefin Rustandar notched a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Molly Keifer (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) at number three singles while Peggy Moore downed Julie Wingstrom (Dallas Lake, Ind./Westview H.S.) 6-3, 6-4 at the fourth spot.
In doubles play, Antrobus and Lawson teamed for an 8-2 victory at the third spot against Payne and Randall. The Cougars won the point with wins at first and second doubles, though. Mayasari and Rubina defeated Keifer and Schwartz 8-2 while Moore and Rustander were 8-4 winners against Sajevic and Wingstrom.
Valparaiso (2-12) will return to Horizon League play on Wednesday afternoon as the Crusaders head to Detroit, Mich. to battle Detroit. First serve against the Titans is set for 1 p.m. CDT.
