Valpo Women Drop Close Fall Opener

            Valparaiso opened the fall portion of the 2008-2009 women’s tennis season on Saturday afternoon, dropping a tight 5-4 decision to Wayne State in Detroit, Mich.

            Playing a nine-point match format, the Crusaders took a 2-1 lead following doubles.  Kim Sajevic (Woodbury, Minn./Woodbury H.S.) and Julie Wingstrom (Dallas Lake, Ind./Westview H.S.) topped Deby Correa and Jennifer Bradford 8-2 at second doubles while the freshman duo of Stephanie York (Elkhart, Ind./Jimtown H.S.) and Katie Bilyeu (Terre Haute, Ind./South H.S.) posted an 8-6 victory at the third spot against Meghan Luzod and Sargam Bhatt.  The Warriors won at number one doubles as Sharon Gill and Milena Vuksanovic defeated Jenny Schwartz (Aurora, Ill./West Aurora H.S.) and Molly Keifer (Richmond, Ind./Richmond H.S.) by the score of 8-3.

            Wayne State won four of the six singles matches to capture the victory.  Valpo came from behind and won a pair of three set wins for its two points though.  Keifer rallied to down Luzod 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 at number two singles while Schwartz defeated Correa 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 at the third spot.  The Warriors earned straight set wins at first, fourth, and fifth singles while Medha Jha topped Christine Antrobus (Fort Wayne, Ind./Homestead H.S.) 6-0, 5-7, 6-3 at number six.

            Valparaiso will remain in the greater Detroit area on Sunday morning for a 9 a.m. CDT contest against Oakland in Rochester, Mich.
