Women Close Spring Trip with Setback at Point Loma Nazarene

Valparaiso wrapped up its spring trip to California on Thursday afternoon, dropping a 9-0 decision to Point Loma Nazarene at the PLNU Tennis Courts in San Diego, Calif.

Using the nine-point scoring system, Point Loma Nazarene (8-3) opened by sweeping all three doubles contests.  Wileen Chiu and Hope Penner defeated Kristin Zakiewicz (Bristol, Ind./Northridge H.S.) and Megan Barthels (Grand Rapids, Mich./Christian H.S.) 8-5 at the top of the lineup while Stephanie York (Elkhart, Ind./Jimtown H.S.) and Kaitlyn Hamel (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain H.S.) fell 8-1 to Maika Adair and Kiersten Steinhauer at the second spot.  At number three doubles Angelina Goheen (Aurora, Ill./Rosary H.S.) and Michele Fredlake (South Bend, Ind./Saint Joseph’s H.S.) dropped an 8-3 match against Preethinka Venugopal and Katelyn Abayan.

In singles play, Bartels fell 6-1, 6-0 at the top of the lineup against Adair while Hamel played the tightest match at two, falling 6-1, 7-6 (2) against Steinhauer.  Third singles saw Penner defeat York 6-1, 6-1 while Chiu topped Fredlake 6-2, 6-0 at the fourth spot.  At five, Venugopal was a 6-0, 6-2 victor over Zakiewicz while Abayan defeated Lauren Kammerer (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso H.S.) 6-0, 6-1 at sixth singles. 

Valparaiso (4-5) will return to action on March 24, facing Butler beginning at 11 a.m. at the Valpo Tennis Complex.
