Crusader Women Fall at Wayne State

The women’s tennis team traveled to Wayne State University on Monday for the team’s third contest of the fall campaign. The Crusaders were unable to repeat their previous performance, as the team fell 8-1 at the home complex of the Warriors.

The Crusaders fell behind early in the competition, as the Warriors finished doubles play with a 2-1 advantage. In first doubles, Anne Li Briand and Yahsha Moore defeated the Crusader pairing of Kaitlyn Hamel (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain) and Kristin Zakiewicz (Bristol, Ind./Northridge) 8-4. In second doubles, Paige Heuer (Munster, Ind./Munster) and Megan Barthels (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) leveled the match at 1-1 after defeating Anastasia Burobina and Alex Poissant in a close 8-6 decision. The Warriors reclaimed the lead shortly after, however, as Michele Fredlake (South Bend, Ind./Saint Joseph’s) and Angelina Goheen (Aurora, Ill./Rosary) fell 8-3 to Wayne State’s Andreea Mitrache and Lauren Hughes.

The Warriors would extend their lead by sweeping the singles matches. In first singles, Hamel fell 6-0 and a close 7-5 to Moore, while Zakiewicz was edged out 7-5, 6-4 in second singles by Julia Kamenko. In third singles, Heuer fell to Mitrache by 6-1, 6-1 decision. Barthels was defeated in fourth singles 6-3, 6-3, and Fredlake the same in fifth singles by a score of 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Morgan Paras (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) rounded out singles play for the Crusaders in hard fought 6-1, 7-6(7-4) loss. Paras played hard enough in the second set to force a tiebreaker, but was unable to force a third set.

The Crusader women close out the fall campaign on Saturday, October 26, as the team travels to Highland Height, Ky. to take on Northern Kentucky. Visit ValpoAthletics.com to view the results from the competition.
