Crusaders Drop First Match of Fall to Marian
The Crusaders fell to 2-1 on the season after a 7-2 loss to Marian Sunday in Indianapolis.

The Valparaiso women's tennis team dropped its first match of the fall Sunday, 7-2, at Marian University in Indianapolis.

Sophomore Paige Heuer (Munster, Ind./Munster) maintained her perfect record in both singles and doubles via a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4 singles over Veronica Clark. Prior to her singles victory, Heuer and senior Megan Barthetls (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) took down Sarah and Anne Potter 8-5 at No. 2 doubles.

Marian recorded the first two points of the match by virtue of victories at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles. Audrey Rang and Veronica Clark registered an 8-0 result over Kaitlyn Hamel (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain)/Kathleen Hebble (Sellersburg, Ind./Sellersburg) before Grace Neathery and Hannah Elliott defeated Michele Fredlake (South Bend, Ind./Saint Joseph's) and Cary Milanes (Miami, Fla./Miami Palmetto) 8-4.

The Crusaders evened the match at two apiece following Heuer's straight set win. However, the host Knights took all five remaining singles matches.

Hamel won the first set 7-5 at No. 1 and led 1-0 in the second set before the match was conceded to Elise Betscher via default.

Milanes and Barthels both dropped hard-fought matches 6-4, 6-4 at No. 3 and No. 5, respectively. Hebble took Rang to three sets at No. 2 before falling 6-0, 6-7 (7-2), 6-4. Anna Potter defeated Fredlake 7-5, 6-1.

Valpo (2-1) will have a couple weeks off to prepare for the UIC Tournament beginning on Saturday, October 4th in Chicago.
