Hamel/Hebble Capture Doubles Win at UIC Invitational
Kaitlyn Hamel and Kathleen Hebble won an 8-7 decision in their opening round doubles match at the UIC Invitational Saturday.

The doubles portion of the UIC Invitational was held at Match Point Tennis Center in Griffith, Indiana on Saturday. Valpo joined Northern Illinois and UIC as participating schools.

Valpo's Kaitlyn Hamel (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain) and Kathleen Hebble (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek) worked an 8-7 (3) victory over NIU's Cristina Alvarez/Abigail Dekkinga in the opening round. UIC's  Keti Mebuke/Ann-Sophie Hahn got the best of the Crusader duo in the second round, though, as Hamel/Hebble fell 8-4. The tandem's run at a third place finish came up short following an 8-1 loss to Mary Malkin/Stephanie McDonald of Northern Illinois.

Malkin and McDonald advanced to the finals in part because of their 8-5 first round victory over Megan Barthels (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) and Paige Heuer (Munster, Ind./Munster). In the consolation bracket, Barthels/Heuer dropped an 8-1 decision to NIU's Nelle Youel/Arantza De La Torre. In their third match of the afternoon, Barthels and Heuer fell short to Alvarez/Dekkinga 8-2.

UIC's Jackie Altansarnai/Oana Manole handed Cary Milanes (Miami, Fla./Miami Palmetto)/Michele Fredlake (South Bend, Ind./Saint Joseph's) an 8-2 opening round loss. Milanes/Fredlake then squared off against Northern Illinois' Alvarez/Dekkinga before dropping an 8-5 match. NIU's Youel/De La Torre then defeated Milanes/Fredlake 8-2 in the consolation bracket.

In round robin play, Morgan Paras (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard)/Erin Staal (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) were on the wrong end of an 8-2 match versus NIU's Maria Rozo/Evelyn Youel. Lauren Kammerer (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso) teamed up with UIC's Bianca Zuzu, who defeated Paras/Staal 8-4 after dropping their first match 8-0 to Roso/Youel.

Singles play will commence tomorrow at the Flames Outdoor Tennis Courts beginning at 9:00 am CT.
