Barthels Records Win, but Crusaders Fall 4-1 to Dayton

The Valparaiso women's tennis team closed out its trip to Ohio on Sunday dropping a 4-1 contest to Dayton, but not before Megan Barthels (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) registered her team-high seventh singles win of the season.

The Flyers (6-7) collected 6-3 wins at No. 1 and 3 doubles to open a 1-0 lead.

Marlys Bridgham and Mandy Marchant defeated Kaitlyn Hamel (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain)/Kathleen Hebble (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek) atop doubles play before Carly Peck and Katie Shepherd handed Barthels and Michele Fredlake (South Bend, Ind./Saint Joseph's) a loss.

UD's Jackie Kawamato opened singles play with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Cary Milanes (Miami, Fla./Miami Palmetto). Bridgham followed with a 6-1, 6-0 victory against Hamel at No. 1.

Barthels battled for a 6-4 triumph in the first set of her No. 5 pairing with Marchant. Marchant was forced to retire due to injury before the second set commenced, giving Barthels the win.

The Flyers clinched the match at No. 6 singles thanks to Shepherd's 6-1, 6-3 defeat of Fredlake.

The Crusaders will return to Valpo to open a five-match homestand. Valpo welcomes Milwaukee to the Courts of NWI on Friday, April 3rd at 10:00 am. The Brown and Gold will continue Horizon League play on Saturday against Green Bay at 10:00 am.
