Women's Tennis Closes Out Home Slate with Close Loss

The Valpo women's tennis team saw its 2015 home schedule come to a close following a narrow 6-1 loss to Chicago State at the Valpo Tennis Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

The Cougar tandem of Marnie Perez-Ochoa and Carynne Lloyd opened at No. 3 with a 6-1 over Morgan Paras (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) and Erin Staal (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven). Chicago State clinched the point at No. 2 after Hanna Pangestu/Matea Roki upended Paige Heuer (Munster, Ind./Munster) and Cary Milanes (Miami, Fla./Miami Palmetto), 6-1. No. 1 doubles finished out their match. CSU's Lorea Gamboa and Faith Huckabee went on to collect a 6-3 victory against Kaitlyn Hamel (Lakewood, Colo./Green Mountain)/Kathleen Hebble (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek).

Gamboa gave the Cougars a 2-0 lead after beating Michele Fredlake (South Bend, Ind./Saint Joseph's) 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5. Valpo's Paras dropped a 6-0, 6-1 duel to Perez-Ochoa at No. 6. Huckabee clinched the victory for Chicago State (3-18) at No. 4 with her 6-4, 6-2 victory over Heuer.

The three remaining singles matches all went three sets.

Milanes dug deep to record a 6-4, 3-6, 10-8 triumph at No. 3 versus Lloyd. The win put Milanes in a tie for the team lead in singles victories with eight.

Hamel fell in a tight 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 match against Pangestu at No. 1. Roki and Hebble went the distance before Chicago State's No. 2 prevailed with a 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 triumph.

The Crusaders (3-15, 1-4 Horizon) will travel to Ohio this weekend to wrap up the regular season. Cleveland State (6-13, 3-3 Horizon) will host the Brown and Gold on Saturday at 11:00 am ET/10:00 am CT. Valpo will then head to Youngstown State (13-8, 6-0 Horizon) for the season finale on Sunday at 9:00 am ET/8:00 am CT.
