Trailing 5-2 in the opening set of her match at No. 4 singles, freshman Meg Modesto (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) assembled an impressive comeback to overthrow Luisa Echeverry, 7-6 (10), 6-4 for a thrilling win. However, the host Akron Zips got the last laugh as they defeated the Valpo women's tennis team 5-2 at the LaTuchie Tennis Center in Akron on Saturday morning.
Akron got out to a 1-0 lead after capturing the doubles point with victories at No. 1 and 3.
Echeverry and Waverly Wituski handed Modesto and Erin Staal (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) a 6-2 loss at No. 3 doubles. The Zips' Sophia Geier and Ariadna Blinova got past Kathleen Hebble (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek)/Paige Heuer (Munster, Ind./Munster) by the same 6-2 margin at No. 3. The tandem of Cary Milanes (Miami, Fla./Miami Palmetto) Randi Wind (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) and AU's Carli Knezevich/Carla Flores played it out at No. 2 where the Valpo duo emerged with a 7-5 victory.
Blinova defeated Hebble atop singles play, 6-0, 6-0. Wind got the Brown and Gold on the scoreboard at No. 5 with her 6-3, 6-2 triumph over Flores. Geier responded by defeating Heuer 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2.
Witsuki clinched the match for Akron at No. 6 after her 6-3, 6-4 win versus junior Morgan Paras (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard). Knezevich outlasted Milanes at No. 3 by a score of 6-2, 7-6 (3).
Modesto's come-from-behind victory at No. 4 provided Valpo with its second point. The 7-6 (10), 6-4 victory was her second in a row.
The Crusaders (0-5) seek to salvage a split on Sunday morning when they face Morgan State (1-1) at the LaTuchie Tennis Center. First serve is scheduled to get underway at 9 am ET/8 am CT.
