The Crusader women's tennis team persevered for a 5-2 victory over Green Bay on Saturday. Kat Hebble and Paige Heuer each went 2-0 between singles and doubles to secure Valpo's first triumph in Horizon League play this season.
Halle Roach (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) and Erin Staal (Grand Haven, Mich./Grand Haven) opened with a 6-0 shutout of Noel Peck/Stephanie Londre at No. 3 doubles. Kat Hebble (Sellersburg, Ind./Silver Creek) and Paige Heuer (Munster, Ind./Munster) brought doubles play to a conclusion with their 6-3 triumph over Samm Pedersen and Jule-Sophie Hermann at No. 1.
The match was brought to a 1-1 tie after No. 5 singles ended with Pedersen getting past Roach, 6-1, 6-1. Valpo fell behind 2-1 once Morgan Paras (Indianapolis, Ind./Bishop Chatard) fell 6-2, 6-3 to Maria Neff at No. 6 singles.
Randi Wind (Park Ridge, Ill./Maine South) beared down righted the ship thanks to a 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 4 versus Hermann. Heuer thrusted the Crusaders ahead 3-2 with a 7-6 (9), 6-2 result over Londre at No. 2.
Freshman Meg Modesto (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) tallied the match-clincher with her 6-3, 5-7, 6-3 victory over Chiara Berg at No. 3. Hebble outlasted Olivia Headford, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (9), 4-3 (6) in a third-set, tie-breaker-shortened finale.
Valpo (2-13, 1-3 Horizon) faces a quick turnaround as it is scheduled to take on Milwaukee (8-8, 2-2 Horizon) Sunday morning at 10:00 am. Green Bay (1-13, 0-4 Horizon) also plays host to UIC (10-5, 4-0 Horizon) Sunday at 10:00 am.
