Vujanic Takes MVC Player of the Week Honors

The Valparaiso University women’s tennis team received Missouri Valley Conference recognition on Tuesday as freshman Jelena Vujanic (Elk Grove Village, Ill. / Elk Grove) was named the conference’s Singles Player of the Week.

Vujanic won her No. 2 singles match in dominant fashion, winning all 12 games of a 6-0, 6-0 sweep of Chaminade's Salamasina Te'i on Monday. The triumph helped Valpo roll to a 9-0 victory over the Silverswords in Honolulu, Hawaii. The win allowed the Crusader rookie to bolster her singles record to 13-3. She leads the team in wins and already has the highest win total by a Valpo player since the 2006-2007 campaign.

This marks the first Singles Player of the Week award of Vujanic’s collegiate career. She was part of the MVC Doubles Team of the Week alongside fellow freshman Claire Czerwonka on Feb. 20. The Crusaders have won two Singles Player of the Week awards this season (Czerwonka on Jan. 23) and four total MVC weekly honors.

Valpo will be back in action on Friday, March 23 against Omaha at 3 p.m. CT. That will mark the first home match of the spring season for Valpo, who have started the year with nine straight road matches.
