Vujanic Continues Winning Ways on First Day of ITA Regional
Jelena Vujanic picked up a pair of wins in singles qualifying on Thursday.

The platform shifted from the Missouri Valley Conference Individual Championship to the ITA Midwest Regional, but the success of Valparaiso University women’s tennis sophomore Jelena Vujanic (Elk Grove Village, Ill. / Elk Grove) remained constant on Thursday. She followed her MVC Individual Title with a pair of qualifying draw wins on the first day of competition in Ann Arbor, Mich.

How It Happened

  • Vujanic started the day with a straight set win over conference foe Natalie Bravo of Illinois State. Vujanic won her Round of 64 match 6-4, 6-3.
  • The Valpo sophomore prevailed by that same score (6-4, 6-3) in her Round of 32 match, this time getting the best of Marquette’s Elisabeth Desmarais.
  • Sophomore Claire Czerwonka (Kenosha, Wis. / Saint Joseph Catholic Academy) engaged in a tight Round of 64 match with Akron’s Ceci Rosas. After winning the first set 6-4, Czerwonka dropped the second set 7-5. Rosas won decisive set 6-0.

  • Vujanic now stands at 10-1 this season and has 29 career wins.
  • Czerwonka holds a season record of 6-4 and has 20 career victories.

Up Next

Vujanic will continue the qualifying draw by facing off with Bowling Green’s Marharita Tavpash on Friday. Singles matches will begin at 8 a.m. CT. In addition, Czerwonka and Vujanic will partake in the doubles main draw, which starts at 1 p.m. CT on Thursday. The Valpo duo’s first match will be against Thielman/Galloway of Oakland.
