Czerwonka Named MVC Singles Player of the Week
Claire Czerwonka earned her seventh career MVC weekly award on Wednesday.

After cracking the Valparaiso University women’s tennis all-time Top 10 for career singles victories this week, Claire Czerwonka (Kenosha, Wis. / Saint Joseph Catholic Academy) was named the Missouri Valley Conference Singles Player of the Week on Wednesday.

The Valpo senior reached the noteworthy milestone in Sunday afternoon’s 5-2 victory over Ferris State at The Courts of Northwest Indiana. Czerwonka became the first Valpo player since 2009 to crack the program’s all-time Top 10 in career singles victories. She has 38 wins in her Valpo tenure, now tied for ninth in the team's record book, with all of those triumphs coming in the upper portion of the Valpo lineup against quality competition.

Czerwonka bounced back from a narrow tiebreak defeat in the second set to top Ferris State's Morgan Waller 6-4, 6-7(11-13), 6-1 at No. 1 singles on Sunday. She rebounded to split her two matches this weekend after falling in a pair of tight sets - 6-4, 6-4 - to Western Michigan's Lindsey Zieglar on Saturday. Czerwonka's three-set victory on Sunday was essential in helping Valpo battle back after dropping the doubles point to secure the team's first win of the season.

This adds to a long list of honors in Czerwonka’s career, as it marks her third career MVC Singles Player of the Week honor to go along with four MVC Doubles Team of the Week awards.

Valpo will be in action on Sunday, Feb. 14, hosting SIUE at 11 a.m. at The Courts of Northwest Indiana.
