Four Tennis Beacons Earn CSC Academic All-District

Four members of the Valparaiso University tennis program were recognized for their academic success on Tuesday as Collegiate Sports Communicators (formerly known as CoSIDA) released its Academic All-District Team for women’s tennis.

Olivia Czerwonka (Kenosha, Wis. / Saint Joseph Catholic Academy), Mia Bertino (Lockport, Ill. / Joliet Catholic), Amanda Tabanera (Valencia, Calif. / Valencia) and Demi Jhaveri (Westlake, Ohio / Westlake) were all recognized. This marked the first year that CSC has honored a tennis-specific academic all-district team. In prior years, tennis student-athletes were grouped with other sports for consideration for the at-large academic all-district squad.

Czerwonka, who owns a 3.70 grade point average in nursing, was also named to the MVC All-Select Team and MVC Scholar-Athlete First Team this season. She ranks second in program history with 62 career doubles wins and second with 63 career singles wins, two shy of the program record.

Bertino, who boasts a 3.85 GPA in elementary education, won 17 singles matches this season and had a combined 32 singles wins over the last two years.

Jhaveri, the owner of a 3.90 GPA in digital media, owns 41 singles wins and 37 doubles triumphs during her Valpo tenure. She rallied for a dramatic victory to lead Valpo over Bradley 4-3 on April 7 of this season.

Tabanera, who holds a 3.65 GPA in healthcare leadership, reached a career milestone by picking up her 50th collegiate singles win this year.

Jhaveri, Bertino and Tabanera received MVC Scholar-Athlete Honorable Mention this season as well. The quartet of Academic All-District honorees played a key role in helping the tennis team win the Valparaiso University Team GPA Award for the second consecutive year.

All four meet CSC academic all-district standards by virtue of having a cumulative grade point average of 3.5 or better. To qualify for the honor, individuals also must be starters, have reached at least sophomore academic status and must have been at their institution for at least one calendar year. The four Beacons will advance to the CSC Academic All-America ballot.
