Hagan Sets Hammer Mark in Season Opener

Valparaiso University junior Holly Hagen (Hobart, Ind./Hobart H.S.) set a new school record in the hammer throw as the Crusaders opened their outdoor season on Friday and Saturday at the Purdue Open in West Lafayette, Ind.

Hagen's mark of 147'2" earned her a fifth place finish in the event, and was 3'1" better than the previous record set by Tracy Broadstone in 1999.

Jessica Cherrington (Roseburg, Ore./Umpqua Valley Christian H.S.) turned in a third place effort for the Brown and Gold in the javelin with a toss of 131'6".

On the track, Amanda Meyer (Somerset, Wis./Somerset H.S.) finished in sixth place in the 400m with a time of 59.52 seconds, while Rachel Nelson (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit H.S.) finished seventh in the 800m crossing the line in 2:21.80.

In the distance events, Amanda Lee (South Lyon, Mich./South Lyon H.S.) placed third in the 5000m run with a time of 18:27.54, while Elizabeth Whiting (Parma, Mich./Western H.S.) was fourth in the 10000m run with a time of 38:23.27.

The Crusaders will return to action next Saturday at DePauw in a quadrangular meet with Indiana Wesleyan and Butler as well.
