Hagen Sets School Mark in Shot Put as Valpo Finishes Fourth at Mid-Con Championships

Holly Hagen (Hobart, Ind./Hobart H.S.) improved upon her school record in the shot put helping Valparaiso earn a fourth place finish at the Mid-Continent Indoor Track and Field Championships on Saturday in Sterling, Ill.

The Crusaders scored 45 points in the championships, moving up one position from last season's finish. Southern Utah won the title with 219 points, followed by Oral Roberts with 162 and Western Illinois with 124.5 points. UMKC finished fifth with 41.5 points, while Chicago State rounded out the field with 23 points.

Hagen's toss of 41'5" was 1 ¾" better than her previous best, helping earn her a fifth place finish in the event. Emilie Marsicek (Spalding, Mich./Carney-Nadeau H.S.) also scored for the Brown and Gold, placing sixth with a heave of 40'8 ¼".

Elsewhere in field events, Amanda Meyer (Somerset, Wis./Somerset H.S.) tied for fifth place in the pole vault, clearing 10'0". Martha Josephson (Detroit Lakes, Minn./Detroit Lakes H.S.) tied for sixth in the high jump with a leap of 5'0 ¼". She was also Valpo's top finisher in the triple jump with a leap of 30'11 ¼", finishing in 11th position.

On the oval, Danielle Nunnelly (Valparaiso, Ind./Valparaiso H.S.) led a trio of scorers for the Crusaders in the mile. The freshman finished with a time of 5:17.72 in fifth position. Amy Mikel (Lemont, Ill./Fenwick H.S.) and Jobeth Schmiesing (North Mankato, Minn./Mankato West H.S.) were sixth and seventh respectively with times of 5:18.69 and 5:19.51.

In the 800m, Rachel Nelson (Lee's Summit, Mo./Lee's Summit H.S.) earned a sixth place finish with a time of 2:20.87, just .49 seconds out of third place. Ashley Billstrom (Hales Corners, Wis./Whitnall H.S.) turned in the Brown and Gold's top finish in the 5000m run with a time of 19:10.29, placing 11th.

Valpo's final points came in the 4x400m relay, where Coree Schmitz (Gillette, Wyo./Campbell County H.S.), Nelson, Meyer, and Maggie Zellner (Downers Grove, Ill./Benet Academy) placed fifth, crossing the finish line with a time of 4:07.09.

The Crusaders will conclude their indoor season next weekend with the Alex Wilson Invitational held in Notre Dame, Ind. Friday's events begin at 6 p.m. CST with Saturday's competition slated for 9 a.m. CST.
