The Valparaiso women's track and field squad opened the indoor season on Saturday at the Mastodon Opener in Fort Wayne, Ind.
Jazmin Taylor cracked Valpo's all-time chart in the high jump, clearing 5'2 1/4”, the second-best effort in Crusader history in the event. Taylor's mark was good for a fifth-place finish. Elsewhere in the jumps, Brooke Historff led Valpo with a second-place finish in the triple jump, leaping 31'6”, while Marissa Crafton placed fifth in the long jump with a mark of 16'1 3'4”. Kelley Freeman cleared 10'6” in the pole vault, good for a third-place finish.
In the throwing events, Sarah Drozdowski led Valpo in both implements. The junior placed third in the weight throw with a toss of 52'7” and seventh in the shot put with a mark of 40'7”. On the track, Kelli Wosick crossed the line fourth in the 400m dash with a time of 1:02.15, while Nicole Zehel covered the 800m run in 2:25.14, good for fifth place. Cleo Holt led Valpo in both sprints, finishing fifth in the 200m dash with a time of 27.31 seconds, while her time of 8.22 seconds narrowly missed qualifying for the event final in the 60m dash.
Valparaiso is scheduled to compete at the Redbird Open next Saturday, Dec. 8, in Normal, Ill., its final meet before the holiday break.
