The Valparaiso volleyball team tied for league-high honors, placing four players on the Academic All-Horizon League team for 2011. Sophomore Sarah Dooms (Greenwood, Ind./Center Grove), redshirt freshman Lindsey Hauch (Coloma, Mich./Coloma), senior Jenny Pokorny (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) and junior Taylor Root (Jenison, Mich./Jenison) all earned the accolade for the combination of their performance on the court and in the classroom.

One of the top outfielders ever to play baseball at Valparaiso University, Russ Steinbeck helped to lead the Crusaders to a pair of Indiana Collegiate Conference championships as well as two NCAA Tournament berths during his career with the Brown and Gold, and on Saturday, February 4, he will be inducted into the Valparaiso University Athletics Hall of Fame.

Valparaiso starts a stretch in which it will play five of its final seven Horizon League contests in the friendly confines of the ARC on Thursday evening, as the Crusaders host Detroit for a special 6:30 p.m. start time. The Crusaders enter the week just one-half game out of first place in the league table.

The second half of Horizon League action tips off on Thursday evening as Valparaiso takes a trip east to the state of Ohio. The Crusaders will battle Youngstown State in the first of three straight road contests while playing five of their next seven games overall away from the Athletics-Recreation Center.

Three Valparaiso cross country student-athletes were awarded Horizon League Academic All-League honors as the league revealed the squads. Sophomore Claire Johnson (Eden Prairie, Minn./Eden Prairie) represented the Crusaders on the women’s side, while junior Joe Johnson (Darien, Ill./Downers Grove South) and senior Jordan Piaskowy (Crete, Ill./Illiana Christian) each earned the accolade on the men’s side.

Among the winningest coaches in college basketball history, Tom Smith both played and coached at Valparaiso University, and on Saturday, February 4, he will be inducted into the Valparaiso University Athletics Hall of Fame.

The Valparaiso men’s basketball team learned Monday evening that it had earned a televised appearance in the 2012 Sears BracketBusters X event and will travel to the West Coast, as the Crusaders will face off against Loyola Marymount in Los Angeles, Calif. on Friday evening, Feb. 17 at 8 p.m. CT live on ESPNU.
