Valparaiso concluded the Horizon League portion of the regular season on Saturday afternoon at the Courts of Northwest Indiana losing a 7-0 match to Cleveland State.
Cleveland State (15-5, 4-1 Horizon League) began the match winning all three doubles points. Phil Orno and Ryan Hamning topped Mike Shideler (Valparaiso, Ind./Munster H.S.) and Mike Wagner (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer H.S.) 8-4 at the top of the lineup. Evan West and Robert Fox defeated Tom Litscher (Eau Claire, Wis./Memorial H.S.) and Alex Lau (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson Senior H.S.) 8-1 at second doubles and Chris Klepatz and Brad Groleski teamed for an 8-2 victory over Dan Brunette (Carmel, Ind./Lutheran H.S. of Indianapolis) and Kyle Stump (Plymouth, Ind./Plymouth H.S.) 8-7 (7) at third doubles.
In singles action, the Vikings won all six matches in straight sets. Fox downed Brunette 6-2, 6-0 at the fifth spot while Groleski defeated Wagner 6-2, 6-1 at number three singles. Orno secured the victory with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Lau at the top before Klepatz defeated Litscher 6-0, 6-2 at fourth singles. Hamning added a 6-2, 7-5 win over Shideler at number two while West defeated Stump 6-4, 6-0 to round out the lineup.
Valparaiso (4-12, 1-5) will close out the regular season at home on Monday afternoon against IPFW. First serve for the Senior Day match will be at 3 p.m. at the Valpo Tennis Complex, in the final home contest for Wagner, Shideler, and Brunette.
