Ancona, Kenyatte Compete in ITA Regional Main Draw
Brandon Ancona played a three-set thriller against Notre Dame in the first round of main draw singles.

The Valparaiso University men’s tennis team had a pair of individuals qualify for the main singles draw of the ITA Midwest Regional hosted by Notre Dame this week. The first two rounds of main-draw singles action were played on Saturday.

Brandon Ancona (Belvidere, Ill. / Rockford Christian) got off to a strong start in his Round of 64 match, taking Set 1 from Notre Dame’s Guillermo Cabrera by as score of 6-1. Cabrera bounced back to take Set 2 by a 6-3 score before the two players engaged in a competitive third set. Ancona fell 7-6(3) in the final set of a thrilling match.

Kweisi Kenyatte (Detroit, Mich. / East English Village Preparatory) also drew a member of the hosts in the opening round as he had the assignment of playing Notre Dame’s William Howells. Kenyatte was on the wrong end of a 6-3, 6-4 match.
