Valpo dropped their last road meet of the regular season Friday afternoon in Bourbonnais, Illinois at the hands of Olivet Nazarene University. The men fell 121-79. while the women lost 126-78.
Sophomore Flavia Segatto (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charelow Flanigan) recorded two victories: the 500-yard and the 1000-yard freestyle. Segatto cruised to the 500-yard freestyle win with a 5:16.34 time, a little more than seven seconds ahead of second-place Samantha Elam.
Segatto essentially doubled the margin of victory in the 1000-yard freestyle over Elam with a 10:48.88 time.
Justine Barnes (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams HS) made a strong push in the final 50 yards of the 100-yard butterfly to pass Natalie VanDenack and take first-place with a 1:02.53 time. The senior overcame more than a half-second lead by VanDenack at the turn.
On the men's side, Gonzalo Castro Diaz (Mexico City, Mexico) continued his run of excellence. The freshman took the 200-yard individual medley relay, edging out Aaron Moyer with a 1:57.23 time. Castro Diaz fell a half-second short of the 100-yard butterfly victory when Andrew Fischer hit the wall at 52.16 just ahead of his 52.64 time.
The 400-yard freestyle relay team of Matt King (Clinton, Ill./Clinton HS), Kyle Braun (McHenry, Ill./West HS) Frederick Jenny (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany HS), and William Mathe (Wauconda, Ill./Carmel HS) registered a ten-second victory with a 3:22.55 mark, earning Valpo 11 points in the event.
The two teams return to the ARC Saturday at 1:00pm where the Butler women's swimming team will meet them. The men's meet will be a dual tilt between Valpo and Olivet Nazarene.
