The 55th-ranked doubles team of Jeffrey Schorsch (Perrysburg, Ohio/Perrysburg) and Charlie Emhardt (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) continued their reign of dominance at the ITA Midwest Regionals on Sunday. The Crusader duo dispatched both ranked opponents they faced to advance to Monday's final.
Schorsch/Emhardt opened the day with an 8-4 win over Northwestern's Strong Kirchheimer/Fedor Baev - the 56th-ranked doubles team in the country - to move into the final four of the doubles tournament.
The semifinals match pitted the pair of Valpo juniors versus Ralf Steinbach and Martin Joyce, the 19th-ranked team from Ohio State.
Schorsch and Emhardt were up 6-5 in the first set, but Steinbach/Joyce broke them to force a tiebreaker, where the Buckeye tandem eked out a 7-5 win. Schorsch and Emhardt responded admirably to take the second set, 6-3.
Valpo's winningest doubles team seized the third-set tiebreaker, 10-6, to capture perhaps the most notable win in program history. The semifinals victory represented their third over a Big Ten team in 48 hours.
Schorsch/Emhardt will meet Notre Dame's Alex Lawson/Quentin Monaghan, the 28th-ranked team, in Monday's 11:00 am CT final at Eck Tennis Pavilion in Notre Dame. In addition to live scoring, Notre Dame will carry live video of the final. The links are posted at ValpoAthletics.com.
