Softball Drops Pair to Lehigh Saturday
Regi Hecker had a three-hit game in Saturday's nightcap.

Weather wreaked havoc on Saturday’s action for the Valpo softball team at the Aggie Classic in College Station, Texas, resulting in a long day at the ballpark for the Beacons. A schedule reshuffle resulted in Valpo facing Lehigh twice on Saturday, with the Beacons falling 11-0 in game one and 7-0 in game two.

How It Happened – Game One

  • Lehigh opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the first.
  • The Mountain Hawks pushed across a run in the second inning before Mother Nature took over, as the skies opened up and forced the game into a rain delay.
  • The delay lasted over seven hours before the teams were able to resume action.
  • Sophomore Lyna Vasquez (Moreno Valley, Calif./Valley View) led off the top of the third inning with a single.
  • Lehigh closed out the scoring with a seven-run fourth inning.

How It Happened – Game Two

  • The schedule adjustment resulted in Valpo facing Lehigh in a repeat engagement 30 minutes after the end of the previous game.
  • Lehigh scored three runs in the top of the first to go on top early.
  • A single and two walks brought the potential go-ahead run to the plate with two outs for the Beacons in the bottom of the second, but a groundout ended the threat.
  • With the score still 3-0, Valpo got two runners into scoring position in the bottom of the fourth before a strikeout kept it off the board.
  • Lehigh added two runs in the fifth and two runs in the seventh for the final margin.

Inside the Games

  • Saturday’s weather issues caused upheaval to the tournament schedule. Saturday’s elongated twinbill versus Lehigh will close the tournament for Valpo, as its rematch from earlier in the weekend against Tulsa has been canceled.
  • Senior Regi Hecker (Lee’s Summit, Mo./Blue Springs South) was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in the nightcap, the senior’s fourth career three-hit game. Hecker picked up five hits on the weekend.

Next Up

With the cancellation of Sunday’s action, Valpo (0-4) returns to the diamond for the Pinnacle PC Invitational next weekend. The three-day, five-game event opens with games against Morehead State and Youngstown State on Friday.
