VanArragon Ties MVC Record with 15th Career MVC Golfer of the Week Honor

Just two days removed from shattering a program record for 54-hole tournament score in relation to par, Valparaiso University men’s golf fifth-year senior Caleb VanArragon (Blaine, Minn. / Blaine) equaled a Missouri Valley Conference mark on Thursday.

VanArragon was named the MVC Golfer of the Week for the 15th time in his esteemed collegiate career, tying Illinois State’s David Perkins for the most MVC Golfer of the Week honors in conference history. A 15th career honor was a fitting number for VanArragon this week after he went 15 strokes under par at the Valpo Fall Invitational.

VanArragon pulled away from the field with a dominant performance to take medalist honors at the event, which was hosted by the Beacons at the par-72, 7054-yard Sand Creek Country Club course in Chesterton, Ind. VanArragon shattered a modern program record for 54-hole tournament score in relation to par. He compiled a 201 (66-67-68) to top the 63-player field while battling back-to-back days of rainy and wet conditions.

VanArragon, who led the field in Par-3, Par-4 and Par-5 scoring, finished the tournament 16 strokes clear of the closest competitor, runner-up Artemiy Yalovenko of DePaul. His record-setting performance helped Valpo hoist the team title despite the fact that two of the squad’s top three golfers did not compete this week due to injury (Mason Bonn) and illness (Anthony Delisanti).

This marked VanArragon’s second consecutive tournament victory and his second straight MVC Golfer of the Week honor. He also claimed medalist recognition last week at Air Force.
