VanArragon Breaks League Record with 16th Career MVC Golfer of the Week Honor

For a Missouri Valley Conference record-setting 16th time in his career, Valparaiso University men’s golf fifth-year senior Caleb VanArragon (Blaine, Minn. / Blaine) was named the league’s Golfer of the Week on Thursday.

VanArragon tied for runner-up honors in the GCU Invitational, which took place this week at the par-71, 7124-yard GCU Golf Course in Phoenix, Ariz. He posted a 54-hole score of 204 (-9), going under par in each round with a round-by-round line of 66-68-70. He tied with Fullerton's Russell Howlett for second in a 93-player field, chasing only Tommaso Zorzetto of host GCU. VanArragon’s opening-round score of 66 tied for the best 18-hole showing by any Beacon this season and matched his season low.

This marked the third time in six tournaments this season that VanArragon has been either the individual medalist or runner-up. In addition, this was his 14th career top-2 finish and his 22nd career top-5 finish. Valpo has achieved MVC Golfer of the Week status following each of its first two spring tournaments as junior Anthony Delisanti (Sanborn, N.Y. / Niagara Wheatfield) won the award on Feb. 29.

VanArragon broke a tie with Illinois State’s David Perkins, who owned the previous record for MVC Golfer of the Week honors with 15. Valpo has boasted the MVC Golfer of the Week after five of the team’s six tournaments this season, with Delisanti winning twice and this marking VanArragon’s third honor in 2023-24.

The Beacons will be back on the course on Sunday, March 24 to compete in the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate in Mobile, Ala.
