Athletes from the Valparaiso University men’s tennis and men’s swimming programs were recognized for their excellence in the classroom on Tuesday as the Summit League announced its 2017-2018 academic honor roll.

The men’s tennis program, which finished as the tournament runner-up in its first season as a Summit League affiliate member, placed five individuals on the academic honor roll. Brandon Ancona (Belvidere, Ill. / Rockford Christian) was named to the honor roll after also receiving Summit Academic All-League honors. He’s joined by teammates Franklin Brozovich (Fort Gratiot, Mich. / Port Huron Northern), Gabriel Carvajal (Pembroke Pines, Fla. / Broward Virtual School [Florida Atlantic]), Daniel Langston (Ponca City, Okla. / Ponca City) and Brian Pecyna (Glen Ellyn, Ill. / Homeschooled).

The Crusader men’s swimming program placed six on the honor roll in its first Summit League season. Under the direction of first-year head coach Miriam McGeath, Valpo athletes to receive recognition were Robert Bretl (Wauwatosa, Wis. / Marquette University), Grant Girten (Blue Ash, Ohio / Sycamore), Brendon Johnson (Northbrook, Ill. / Glenbrook North), Dylan Ogle, Max Penn (Columbus, Ohio / St. Charles Prep) and Brett Strongman (Wolverine Lake, Mich. / Walled Lake Central).
