The Valparaiso men's track and field team completed its final tuneup for the Mid-Continent Conference Outdoor Championships Saturday, competing at the Butler Twilight meet in Indianapolis, Ind.

Two Crusaders posted second-place finishes on the day. Steve Bartholomew (Valparaiso, Ind./Morgan Township) finished as the runner-up in the discus throw with a toss of 164'11", and added a sixth-place effort in the hammer throw, recording a mark of 182'6". Brett Maynard (Pawcatuck, Conn./Stonington) placed second in the javelin throw, setting a new personal best by tossing the implement 168'10".

Philip Lohrmann (Battle Ground, Wash./Battle Ground [Clark C.C.]) continued his strong season in the pole vault, clearing 14'5 ", good for fourth place. The height matched his effort from last week when he moved into second on Valpo's all-time list in the event.

On the track, Rich Krupar III (Elyria, Ohio/Midview) led the way with a sixth-place finish in the 800m run, crossing the line in 1:57.08, the fastest by any Crusader athlete this season. Tom Heun (Brecksville, Ohio/Brecksville-Broadview Heights) came up with a sixth-place finish of his own in the 110m hurdles, completing the race in 15.81.

Valparaiso looks to put it all together this coming week as the Crusaders travel to Kansas City, Mo. to take part in the Mid-Con Outdoor Championships. The three-day meet begins Thursday, May 10 at 9:30 a.m.
