Mullings Scores in Two Events to Lead Beacons on Day 2 at MVC Outdoor Championships

The Valparaiso University men’s track & field team piled up additional points at the Missouri Valley Conference Outdoor Championships thanks to the jumps of sophomore Micah Mullings (Minesing, Ontario, Canada / Barrie North) on Saturday at Indiana State’s Gibson Track & Field Complex in Terre Haute, Ind. He scored in both the long jump and high jump.

How It Happened

  • Mullings established a new personal best in the high jump by clearing 1.95 meters (6-4.75). He placed fourth in that event and notched five points for the team.
  • Mullings added a sixth-place finish in the long jump with a season-best mark of 7.19m (23-7.25). He added three points to total eight on the day.
  • In the decathlon, AJ Walsh (Lombard, Ill. / IC Catholic Prep) had a personal-best total of 6,002 to place sixth in the event. He remains second in program history behind only Jason Scott at 6,225 in 1998. Brian Sponaugle (Milton, De. / Mariner) remains fourth in program history in the decathlon after accruing 5,646 points.
  • Saturday’s prelims of various events on the track produced PRs for the Beacons. In the sprints, a trio of Valpo women established new personal bests in the 100 – Taylor Pusateri (Portage, Ind. / Portage) at 12.55, Juliana Ferrara (Fox River Grove, Ill. / Cary-Grove) at 12.60 and Kai Dilosa (Merrillville, Ind. / Lake Central) at 12.86. The men were led by Tim Whitelaw (Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) in the 100 at 11.07 followed by Nathan Wessell (Heartland, Wis. / Lake County Lutheran), who PR’d at 11.11.
  • In the 3000 steeplechase, Joseph Scheele’s (Mahomet, Ill. / Mahomet-Seymour) time of 9:16.00 helped him to a top-10 finish and represented a PR. He now ranks second in program history in the steeplechase and posted Valpo's best time in that event since 1972.
  • Other Valpo PRs included Reilly Ritter (Tabernacle, N.J. / Seneca [FGCU]) in the 800 at 2:24.95 and Chaise Magnuson (LaPorte, Ind. / LaPorte) in the 110 hurdles at 15.57.
  • The Valpo men have 23 points and are in seventh of 10 with one day to go. The Beacons are only one point behind sixth and 5.5 behind fifth.
