The Valparaiso University volleyball team made it a trio of victories on the opening weekend of play, capturing its fourth consecutive in-season tournament title by claiming the Chattanooga Classic on Saturday with 3-0 wins over Eastern Kentucky and Troy. Sophomore Taylor Graboski (Upper Sandusky, Ohio/Upper Sandusky) was named Tournament MVP, while juniors Emily Campbell (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) and Morganne Longoria (Burlington, Wis./Burlington) were named to the All-Tournament Team as well.
The Crusaders dominated Eastern Kentucky offensively, hitting .286 while out-killing their foes 50-28 – led by 13 kills from Campbell on .407 hitting and 12 kills by freshman Katherine Carlson (Lake Orion, Mich./Notre Dame Prep). Then, in the tournament finale versus Troy, Valpo limited its opponent to just 29 kills over the three sets, while racking up eight blocks – seven of which were tallied by redshirt freshman Kayla Currier (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East).
Graboski posted the Crusaders’ best hitting percentage of the weekend en route to earning tournament MVP accolades, hitting 344 while averaging 2.64 kills/set. Campbell posted 3.90 kills/set on .284 hitting while also averaging 3.80 digs/set, and Longoria averaged a team-high 4.55 digs/set as Valpo went 3-0 on the weekend.
Valparaiso (3-0) will put its perfect record in 2015 on the line next weekend at the Terrier Invitational in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y., hosted by St. Francis. The Crusaders open tournament action with a pair of matches on Friday, Sept. 4, facing Rider at 2 p.m. CT and NJIT at 5 p.m. CT.
