Valpo Tennis Hosts Senior Day During Season Finale
The tennis program honored its seniors on Saturday.

The Valparaiso University tennis team recognized Olivia Czerwonka (Kenosha, Wis. / Saint Joseph Catholic Academy), Amanda Tabanera (Valencia, Calif. / Valencia), Demi Jhaveri (Westlake, Ohio / Westlake), Eleanor Chapman (East Sussex, England / Eastbourne College [UT Martin / Lipscomb]) and Allison McConnell (Westland, Mich. / Churchill) prior to Saturday’s Senior Day match against Missouri State, which was held outdoors at the Valpo Tennis Complex. The visiting Bears prevailed 4-2 to bring the season to an end for the Beacons.

How It Happened

  • The Valpo No. 3 doubles tandem of Chapman and Jhaveri took care of business at No. 3, topping the Missouri State duo 6-2. Missouri State prevailed at No. 1 doubles, so the doubles point came down to No. 2.
  • With Czerwonka battling an injury, she and Moira Silva (Houston, Texas / Houston Tennis Academy) played at No. 2 doubles and engaged in a tight contest with Mary Houston and Juliette Robinson. The Missouri State pair eventually edged its way to a 7-6(3) victory to win the doubles point for the Bears.
  • The first singles match to finish was a Valpo victory as Mia Bertino (Lockport, Ill. / Joliet Catholic) succumbed just two games while cruising to a 6-1, 6-1 sweep of Alyson Piskulic at No. 5 singles.
  • The Beacons played shorthanded in singles as Czerwonka did not play due to her injury. Missouri State picked up wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to take a 3-1 lead in the team score.
  • The remaining matches all went three sets with Valpo needing victories on all three courts to take the match. Elizabeth Sobieski (Muskego, Wis. / Muskego) did her part at No. 6, rallying from a set down to beat Silva Avakian 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
  • The Bears clinched the win when Houston edged out Tabanera 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3, and the No. 4 singles match featuring Chapman went unfinished.

  • Bertino garnered her 17th win of the season and the 38th of her career.
