Tennis Grabs Third Straight Win, Czerwonka Ties Doubles Record
Olivia Czerwonka tied the program's career doubles record on Saturday.

The Valparaiso University tennis team captured its third straight win, defeating Purdue Northwest 6-1 on Saturday afternoon at The Court of Northwest Indiana. By virtue of her win at No. 1 doubles, Olivia Czerwonka (Kenosha, Wis. / Saint Joseph Catholic Academy) tied the program record for career doubles victories.

How It Happened

  • The Beacons swept the three doubles matches, including the record-tying triumph for Czerwonka at No. 1. She teamed up with Moira Silva (Houston, Texas / Houston Tennis Academy) to beat Sienna Lopez/Regina Rioja 6-1.
  • The other two doubles matches were also one-sided in favor of the hosts. At No. 2, Elizabeth Sobieski (Muskego, Wis. / Muskego) and Sydney Stone (Brisbane, Australia / Tyler JC) recorded a 6-2 win over Oona Kintscher/Daniela Rubio, while at No. 3 Jolene Fernandes (Calgary, Alberta, Canada) and Mia Bertino (Lockport, Ill. / Joliet Catholic) rattled off six straight games to whitewash Salma Raslan and Hayley Tsuen.
  • Czerwonka was the first singles player off the court, rattling off six straight games in the first set before polishing off the match with a 6-3 win in Set 2 against Kintscher.
  • The back half of Valpo’s singles lineup all enjoyed sweeps as well. At No. 6, Stone topped Tsuen 6-2, 6-2, while Fernandes dispatched Raslaw 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5. After coming away victorious in a tight first set, Sobieski pulled away in Set 2 to beat Rioja 7-5, 6-1 at No. 4.
  • At No. 3, Bertino and Rubio split the first two sets with each player picking up a 6-3 win. Since the team match was already clinched, the match went to a match tiebreak at one set all. Bertino prevailed in a tight tiebreak 11-9.
  • At No. 1, Silva picked up a 7-5 win in Set 1 before dropping the second set 6-0. They went to a match tiebreak, and Lopez edged out a 10-7 win.

Inside the Matches

  • Czerwonka picked up her 10th doubles win of the season, moving into a tie for the program record for career doubles wins. This marked her 72nd career doubles victory, now even with her older sister Claire atop the record book.
  • In singles play, Czerwonka recorded her 15th win this season and the 78th of her career. She already owns the program record for career singles wins.
  • Sobieski picked up her 11th singles win this season, while Stone earned No. 7. Bertino upped her singles win total to eight, while Fernandes increased her season win total to 12.
  • At No. 1 doubles, Valpo beat a pair that featured Lopez, a first-team all-conference performer last season. No. 2 singles, Czerwonka downed Kintscher, a second team all-conference choice last year.
