Walda Wins 5000M, Outdoes Previous Program Mark by 20 Seconds to Highlight Day 1 at Meyo
Evan Walda outdid his previous program record in the 5,000 by 20 seconds on Friday.

Another week, another record-setting time for Evan Walda (Fort Wayne, Ind. / South Side). The Valparaiso University track & field standout outdid his own previous program record in the 5,000-meter run, representing a highlight of the first day of action at the Meyo Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame in Notre Dame, Ind.

How It Happened

  • Walda stopped the clock in 14:18.32, outdoing his previous best in the 5,000 by 20 seconds. His previous top time of 14:38.04 occurred last season. Walda won the premier 5,000 race, outdoing two Indiana runners and two Illinois runners as four Big Ten student-athletes joined him in the top five.
  • In that same event, Simeon Ehm (Castle Rock, Colo. / Heritage) joined Walda in the top 10 with an eighth-place time of 14:29.34, setting a PR.
  • Sophomore Micah Mullings (Minesing, Ontario, Canada / Barrie North) enjoyed a runner-up finish in the long jump with a personal-best leap of 7.32m. He finished behind only Michigan’s Jake Wall. At 24 feet, his long jump ranks second in program history behind Jarrett Mickens (2011, 24-1.25).
  • In the men’s 60, Tim Whitelaw (Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) had a personal best of 7.16 seconds to place ninth.
