Valparaiso University’s Bryce Shafer (Wabash, Ind./Northfield H.S.) has been named the Horizon League’s Pitcher of the week after picking up his conference-leading sixth victory of the season in Valpo’s 2-1 win at Wright State on Sunday.

The sophomore right-hander allowed just one unearned run and scattered nine hits while walking two and striking out seven in eight innings of work.

For the season, Shafer is 6-2 with a 3.71 earned run average, where he ranks sixth in the league.  He also is third in the Horizon League with 60 strikeouts, fifth in innings pitched (63.0), and eighth in batting average against (.277).

In his last six starts, Shafer is 4-1 with a 1.51 ERA in 41.2 innings or work.

This is Shafer’s second career Pitcher of the Week accolade after he also earned the honor in March of 2008.

Shafer and Valpo (19-19, 7-8 Horizon) return to the diamond on Tuesday afternoon when the Crusaders host Bradley at Emory G. Bauer Field in a 3 p.m. contest.
