Baseball Edged by Binghamton to Close Weekend
Kyle Schmack homered on Sunday. Again.

The Valparaiso University baseball team was edged 3-2 by Binghamton on Sunday in a game hosted by Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. The Beacons still possessed a winning weekend after victories over Elon on Friday and Saturday.

How It Happened

  • What else is new? Kyle Schmack (Wanatah, Ind. / South Central) homered again on Sunday, this time a solo shot in the bottom of the first to start the scoring.
  • The Beacons doubled the lead in the bottom of the third, an inning that started modestly with two outs and nobody on base. Kaleb Hannahs (West Terre Haute, Ind. / West Vigo) and Schmack drilled back-to-back doubles to plate a run.
  • After working shutout ball in each of the first three innings, lefty Lucas Foley (Deer Park, Ill. / Lake Zurich) yielded a run in the top of the fourth. That frame followed a similar script as the bottom of the third with the Bearcats putting together consecutive two-out doubles.
  • Foley left after four innings, allowing one run on five hits while walking one and striking out two.
  • A two-out solo homer in the sixth tied the game at two, then Binghamton led off the eighth with another home run to take a 3-2 lead that stood as the final.

Inside the Game

  • Schmack’s home run was his fourth of the season and lifted his RBI total to 10. He moved into a tie for fifth in program history for career home runs with 22, joining Scott Carter (1981-1984), Ken Mannings (1988-1991), Shawn Lemmons (1994-1996) and Nate Palace (2014-2017).
  • Schmack’s double was his third of the season and the 40th of his collegiate career. He moved into a tie for ninth in the program record book, joining Rob Hadrick (1994-1997) with 40 career doubles.
  • Schmack and Hannahs had two hits apiece, combining for four of the team’s five hits.
  • Binghamton is the preseason favorite to win the American East Conference.
