Crusader Women Finish Fifth at Benbow Invitational

A pair of individual top-10 finishers led the Valparaiso women’s golf team to a fifth-place finish at the Benbow Invitational, hosted by Butler in Jacksonville Beach, Fla.

The Crusaders, who led after Monday’s first round, struggled with their scoring on Tuesday, dropping into fifth place with a second-round total of 335. Valpo’s total of 647 was four strokes back of Southern Indiana in fourth place, while the host Bulldogs claimed the team title with a two-round total of 631.

Senior Sibil Gill (Kokomo, Ind./Western) led the Crusaders on Tuesday with a round of 73, finishing in eighth place with a  two-round score of 157. Sophomore Katie Willenbrink (Mishawaka, Ind./Penn) joined Gill in the top-10 at the tournament’s conclusion, finishing in fourth place with a 36-hole score of 154 following a round of 81 on Tuesday.

Junior Angie Kim (Schaumburg, Ill./Fremd) earned a top-15 finish as well, placing 14th as she finished with a 160 total. Junior Sydney Shrum (Cloverdale, Ind./Cloverdale) and freshman Madison McCreary (Batesville, Ind./Batesville) posted two-round totals of 176 and 186, respectively. Playing as individuals, freshman Kylie Shoemake (Schererville, Ind./Lake Central) finished with a 168 to tie for 28th, while sophomore Kiana Jongsma (Dyer, Ind./Lake Central) shot 176 over the 36 holes.

Valparaiso continues spring action at another tournament hosted by Butler the next two days, the Bulldog Florida Invitational at Windsor Parke G.C. in Jacksonville, Fla.
