Valpo Women’s Swimming Continues 2012-2013 Season Saturday

The Valparaiso women’s swimming and diving team won 10 of 11 events on Saturday as the Crusaders swam at Monmouth College in Monmouth, Ill.  No team scores were kept for the meet.

Sophomore Flavia Segatto (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Charleow Flanigan) led the way for the Crusaders by winning three individual events.  Segatto showcased her versatility, winning the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:21.28.  The sophomore also showed her ability to swim the long-distance events, capturing both the 500 free (5:23.13) and 1000 free (11:02.35).

Junior Andrea Bretl (Wauwatosa, Wis./West) joined Segatto as a multiple event winner on Saturday.  Bretl took the 100 free with a time of 56.26 before touching the wall first in the 200 free, touching in 2:00.49.  Sophomore Lauren Knop (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) captured the 50 free with a time of 26.58, while senior Justine Barnes (Rochester Hills, Mich./Adams) took the 100 butterfly in 1:02.75 and freshman Ciara Lightner (Dixon, Ill./Dixon) swam the 100 backstroke in 1:03.56 to earn first place.

The Crusaders also won both relay events on Saturday.  Lightner, Knop, freshman Erin McBride (St. Louis, Mo./Webster Groves) and Bretl teamed up to win the 200 free relay with a time of 1:47.39.  Meanwhile, Lightner, sophomore Makenna Cannon (Delafield, Wis./Kettle Moraine), Barnes and McBride took the 200 medley relay, finishing in 1:56.98.

The Crusaders return to action next Friday, October 19 as Valpo hosts Cleveland State at the ARC.  The meet is scheduled for a 5 p.m. start.
