LaBarbera Announces Staffing Changes

Valparaiso University director of athletics Mark LaBarbera announced a pair of staffing changes within the athletic department. Traci Young, who served as head women's tennis coach for six-plus seasons will move to a full-time administrator role as associate director of athletics for student services. Tammy Cecchini, who joined the women's tennis program as an assistant coach in 2014, has been promoted to head coach.

"This is a tremendous opportunity for both Traci and Tammy. Traci has demonstrated a commitment to the student-athlete experience at Valparaiso for over six years and her expanded role will benefit all within the department. I want to thank her for the strong foundation she laid for the women's tennis team. I have complete confidence that Tammy can raise our women's tennis program to the level where the Crusaders are a major player in the Horizon League," LaBarbera said.

Young assumes the full-time position of associate director of athletics for student services following the retirement of Kathy Marlowe. Young was named assistant director of athletics for life skills programs in June of 2012. She also served as senior woman administrator from 2012 through the end of the 2014-2015 academic year.

For Cecchini. this represents her first head coaching position. She served as assistant coach at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania before working in the same capacity with Valpo beginning last August. During her collegiate days, Cecchini played at both No. 1 singles and doubles at Penn State. The Minnesota native was elected team captain of the Nittany Lions in 1993 and 1994.

"I want to thank both Mark and Traci for preparing me for this opportunity. I've been working with these young women for over a year now and I'm excited about taking on the challenges of being a head coach. My goal is to recruit the strongest possible talent and compete in the Horizon League Championship," Cecchini said.
