Silva Earns MVC Singles Player of the Week Honor
Moira Silva was named MVC Singles Player of the Week on Wednesday.

After posting a perfect 4-0 record in singles matches this week including a 2-0 start to Missouri Valley Conference play, Valparaiso University tennis freshman Moira Silva (Houston, Texas / Houston Tennis Academy) has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week.

Silva, Valpo’s No. 2 singles player, improved her singles mark to 17-4, climbing into the top 10 in program history for singles wins in a season. She started the week by beating Esmee Andresen, the No. 17 ranked junior college player in the nation, in straight sets in Tuesday’s match against Hillsborough. She followed that up with another one-sided 6-3, 6-1 victory over Anna Medvyedyeva in the team’s win over South Dakota on Wednesday.

Silva rallied for a 6-7(3-7), 6-4, 6-4 win in Saturday’s conference opener against Murray State’s Emma Honore, an All-Southland Conference First Team performer last season while playing for Texas A&M Corpus Christi. She closed the week by beating Belmont’s Abi Solomon 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 without dropping a game in the third set to help Valpo give the MVC preseason favorites a tight battle in a 4-3 team setback.

This marks the team’s third weekly award of the season and the second time Silva has been a part of an MVC weekly honor as she was previously part of the MVC Doubles Team of the Week.

The Beacons will step outside of league play by hosting Milwaukee on Saturday at 2 p.m. at The Courts of Northwest Indiana, the final nonconference match of the season. League play resumes on Sunday with UIC in town for a noon start at The Courts of NWI.
