Vinny Giacalone finished his fifth season at Valparaiso in 2018, working as the offensive line coach as well as the program's recruiting coordinator.
Giacalone has been on staff throughout Valpo's impressive turnaround as the program went from winning three total games in the four years prior to the current staff’s arrival to enjoying its first winning season since 2003 in 2017. Giacalone has been in charge of the program's recruiting efforts during the resurgence. In addition, Giacalone's offensive line thrived during the team's noteworthy 2017 season, finishing tied for 10th nationally in fewest sacks allowed per game at 0.91.
Offensive lineman Tom Schofield was a second-team all-league performer in 2017 before both Schofield and center Jack Jarnigan received All-PFL Honorable Mention in 2018. Giacalone also served as the position coach for offensive lineman Eric Rentschler, who earned Academic All-PFL First Team honors in 2018 after garnering Academic All-PFL Second Team in 2017.
Giacalone made an immediate impact with the Brown and Gold in his first season at Valpo, as the offensive line led the nation in fewest sacks allowed per game (0.42) in 2014. Offensive lineman Stuart Barkley was named second-team all-league that season.
Giacalone’s efforts go beyond the gridiron, as he oversees the team’s travel, student managers and social media accounts while also serving as a liaison with Valpo’s compliance office. He has helped skyrocket the @valpoufootball social media presence during his time with the program and successfully integrated social media into the team’s recruiting efforts.
The 2010 Carnegie Mellon graduate was an assistant coach and co-recruiting coordinator at his alma mater for two seasons before making the transition to Lehigh in 2012. In his first year on the Mountain Hawk staff, Giacalone helped mold an offensive line in transition into one of the Patriot League’s top offensive line units. With four first-time starters in the mix, Lehigh led the Patriot League in passing offense and ranked fifth in the nation in fewest sacks allowed.
