Valparaiso University tennis fifth-year senior Olivia Czerwonka (Kenosha, Wis. / Saint Joseph Catholic Academy) was named to the Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete First Team, leading a group of five Beacons that received scholar-athlete laurels from the conference office on Thursday.

Olivia Czerwonka Wins Final Collegiate Singles Match, Wraps Up Record-Setting Career
A decorated and record-setting career ended in winning fashion on Sunday afternoon in Chicago as Valparaiso University tennis fifth-year senior Olivia Czerwonka (Kenosha, Wis. / Saint Joseph Catholic Academy) came from a set down to prevail in a three-set singles match, finishing out an unforgettable era that featured program records for career singles and doubles victories, a Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year award, an MVC Individual Singles Title and an MVC Individual Doubles Title.

Tennis Celebrates Seniors on Saturday
The Valparaiso University tennis team recognized its senior class on Saturday afternoon at The Courts of Northwest Indiana as Olivia Czerwonka (Kenosha, Wis. / Saint Joseph Catholic Academy), Mia Bertino (Lockport, Ill. / Joliet Catholic) and graduate assistant coach Claire Czerwonka were recognized by head coach Bob Modesto prior to their final home match. Moira Silva (Houston, Texas / Houston Tennis Academy) earned a victory at No. 1 Singles in the team’s 6-1 defeat to visiting Murray State, a squad that is undefeated in Missouri Valley Conference play.

It’s been a year of down-to-the-wire matches for the Valparaiso University tennis team, which dropped Sunday’s showdown with Missouri State in Springfield, Mo. by a 4-3 score. The teams split the six singles matches after the Bears had picked up a doubles point that proved crucial in the match’s outcome.

Fifth-year senior Olivia Czerwonka (Kenosha, Wis. / Saint Joseph Catholic Academy) and sophomore Moira Silva (Houston, Texas / Houston Tennis Academy) were victorious in their morning matches against a Toledo tandem on Sunday to earn a place in the championship round of the BGSU Invite, hosted by Bowling Green this weekend in Bowling Green, Ohio. The Beacon pair dropped their championship showdown to a different Rocket combination later in the day to finish as the runners-up in the tournament.

Fifth-year senior Olivia Czerwonka (Kenosha, Wis. / Saint Joseph Catholic Academy) continued to author her Valparaiso University tennis legacy on Saturday afternoon with a pair of singles victories at the BGSU Invitational, hosted by Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, Ohio. Czerwonka’s first win of the day tied the program record for career singles triumphs that was set by Kate Evangelist from 2003-2007, and the tie didn’t last long as later in the day Czerwonka picked up her 66th career singles success to move all alone atop the program record book.

The Valparaiso University tennis team enjoyed a successful Friday of action at the BGSU Invitational, a three-day event hosted by Bowling Green in Bowling Green, Ohio this weekend. Every Valpo group remained in the main draw in an event that is utilizing a unique format. Valpo duos match up with a duo from another school for one doubles match and two singles matches and whichever pair wins two of three advances in the main draw.
