Tom Osborne Named Valpo Bowling Interim Head Coach

Valparaiso University director of athletics Dr. Charles Small announced that Tom Osborne, a veteran head coach with a championship pedigree, has been hired as interim head coach of the Valpo Bowling program.

“I am pleased to welcome Coach Osborne to Valparaiso University and Valpo Athletics as interim head coach of our bowling program,” Small said. “Coach Osborne is a proven leader in the bowling community who brings a strong track record of development and success. I am proud of how our student-athletes handled this transition. I look forward to seeing the team continue to climb the rankings in the NTCA national poll, while engaging in their holistic development and excelling academically.”

Osborne joins Valpo as interim head coach following a decorated eight-year stint as head coach of the Indiana Tech men's and women's bowling programs. While there, Osborne led the Warriors to a pair of NAIA national titles, as the Indiana Tech women won the inaugural NAIA National Championship in 2021 and the men's team claimed the championship in 2022.

“I am excited to come to Valpo and lead the bowling program,” Osborne said. “Joining Valpo gives me the opportunity to coach at the highest level that collegiate bowling has to offer, as well as compete in the best conference in women’s collegiate bowling.”

Under Osborne's guidance, the Indiana Tech men's and women's programs combined for nine conference regular season titles and seven conference tournament championships. A three-time conference Coach of the Year, Osborne coached 13 NAIA All-Americans in his time with the Warriors.

In his time at Indiana Tech, Osborne grew the bowling programs to where they consistently were among the nation’s best over his last few seasons at the helm. In 2022-23, Osborne led the women’s team to conference regular season and tournament titles and the men’s team to the conference tournament title. Both squads advanced to their respective semifinals at the 2023 NAIA National Championships.

The 2021-22 campaign was highlighted by the men’s team claiming the NAIA national title. Both the men and the women featured a pair of NAIA All-Americans, with the women’s team boasting the NAIA Player of the Year. Both teams won conference regular season championships and the men claimed the conference tournament title as well.

In 2020-21, Osborne led the Warrior women to the title at the inaugural NAIA National Championships. The teams combined for three NAIA All-American honors — one on the women’s side, two on the men’s side — while Indiana Tech swept the men’s and women’s conference tournament championships as well.

Indiana Tech swept conference regular season titles three consecutive seasons – 2017-18 through 2019-20 — with Osborne being honored as conference Coach of the Year all three years. The women’s team reached #1 in the NAIA national poll during the 2019-20 campaign after finishing as runner-up the previous year at the NAIA National Invitational. The women’s team claimed a conference tournament title as well in 2017-18, while the men’s team captured a conference tournament crown in Osborne’s first season as the helm in 2015-16.

Prior to his time at Indiana Tech, Osborne spent a decade coaching at the high school level. He also spent time as a professional bowler in the mid-1980s.
