Valpo Football Announces Week 6 Team Awards

The Valparaiso University football program announced its team awards for Week 6 on Monday following Saturday’s 20-19 victory over Pioneer Football League preseason favorite San Diego.

After making the game-winning, 9-yard touchdown catch with 25 seconds remaining to help Valpo beat the Toreros for the first time since 2003, freshman wide receiver Braden Contreras (Hillsdale, Ill. / Hinsdale Central) was named the team’s Offensive Player of the Week. Contreras made three catches for 69 yards including a 25-yard grab.

Senior Drew Gedrys (McDonald, Pa. / South Fayette) was named the team’s Special Teams Player of the Week after also earning co-PFL Special Teams Player of the Week recognition. He blocked two PAT attempts in the one-point victory, becoming just the third player in the nation to block two kicks in the same game this season.

The Defensive Player of the Week award went to the entire defense after head coach Landon Fox and defensive coordinator Brian Dougherty’s unit held a potent San Diego offense to 19 points. The Valpo defense accrued seven tackles for loss, two interceptions and a fumble recovery in the victory.

Valpo finished the spring slate in second place in the PFL at 4-2, just behind league-champion Davidson, which earned the league’s automatic FCS playoff berth at 4-1. This marked Valpo’s best winning percentage since the 2003 campaign.
