Valpo Football Announces Team Awards for Week 8

The Valparaiso University football program announced its weekly team awards on Monday following a 45-28 victory over Dayton on Saturday afternoon at Brown Field.

The team has recognized sophomore wide receiver Braden Contreras (Hillsdale, Ill. / Hinsdale Central) as Offensive Player of the Week, senior defensive back Kohlton Sherman (Millington, Mich. / Millington) as Defensive Player of the Week and redshirt sophomore defensive back Austin Chilton (Windermere, Fla. / West Orange) as Special Teams Player of the Week.

In addition, the team has announced the following Scout Team Players of the Week – freshman quarterback Mikey Appel (Springboro, Ohio / Springboro) on offense, sophomore wide receiver Tytus Ragle (New Castile, Ind. / New Castle) on special teams and sophomore defensive back Josh Gholston (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) on defense.

Contreras led the team with four catches for 118 yards, becoming the first Valpo player with a 100-yard receiving game since Deuce Larose on Nov. 9, 2019 vs. Morehead State (112). Sherman accrued four tackles, while Chilton recovered a fumble on a special-teams play for one of his two takeaways. Chilton also earned Defensive Player of the Week recognition from the Pioneer Football League and College Sports Madness.

Valpo will look to make it back-to-back victories this week with a trip to San Diego for a 3 p.m. start on Saturday.
