The Valparaiso University football program has announced its team Players of the Week for Saturday’s game at San Diego.
After accruing a career-high 12 tackles, senior defensive lineman Austin Martins (Newman, Calif. / Orestimba [Modesto JC]) was named the team’s Defensive Player of the Week. Martins boasted 4.5 tackles for loss, tied for the eighth most in a single game in the FCS nation this season. He also accrued two sacks, including a strip sack that led to a Valpo fumble recovery.
Return specialist Chuck Maxwell (Elkhart, Ind. / Elkhart Christian Academy) was recognized as the team’s Special Teams Player of the Week. He totaled 94 kickoff return yards on three attempts, averaging 31.3 yards per return with a long of 37.
In addition, the team has named the following Scout Team Players of the Week – freshman offensive lineman Jacob Ford (Tarpon Springs, Fla. / Calvary Christian) on offense, freshman linebacker Ayden Davison (Robbinsdale, Minn. / Robbinsdale Cooper) on defense and sophomore Josh Gholston (Blacksburg, Va. / Blacksburg) on special teams.
