Valpo Football Announces Team Awards for Week 7

The Valparaiso University football program has announced its team awards for Week 7, a tight 26-25 setback in the Hoosier Helmet rivalry game on Saturday afternoon at Brown Field.

Fifth-year senior running back Aaron Dawson (Westbury, N.Y. / W.T. Clarke / Milford Prep [Central Connecticut]) has been tabbed the team’s Offensive Player of the Week, while redshirt senior punter Evan Matthes (Reston, Va. / South Lakes [West Virginia]) has earned team Special Teams Player of the Week recognition.

In addition, the program has named the following Scout Team Players of the Week – sophomore tight end Jalen Jones (North Brunswick, N.J. / St. Thomas Aquinas [Lincoln]) on offense, freshman defensive back Akim Abdur-Rahim (Indianapolis, Ind. / Pike) on defense and freshman defensive lineman Alex Goworowski (Chicago, Ill. / Saint Patrick) on special teams.

Dawson ran for upwards of 150 yards for the second straight week, totaling 158 yards on 14 carries to go along with the aforementioned touchdown, his fourth of the season. His day was highlighted by a 99-yard touchdown run that tied an FCS record for longest play from scrimmage, shattered a Pioneer Football League record for longest rushing play and outdid a program record for longest scoring rush from scrimmage that had stood since 1949.

Matthes averaged 45.8 yards per punt and pinned a pair inside the 20 with a long of 54. For the season, he holds a punting average of 43.6.

Valpo will return to action on Saturday at Morehead State for a game that will kick off at 1 p.m. CT on ESPN3.
