Valpo Football Announces Week 4 Team Awards

The Valparaiso University football program has announced its team awards for Week 4 of the season following this weekend’s game vs. Marist at Brown Field.

Redshirt senior wide receiver Solomon Davis (Brighton, Tenn. / Brighton) was named the team’s Offensive Player of the Week, while senior defensive lineman Kurt Kessen (Shelby Township, Mich. / Utica) achieved the team’s Defensive Player of the Week nod. Redshirt senior return specialist Jashon Butler (Lynwood, Wash. / Meadowdale [Arizona]) was tabbed Special Teams Player of the Week, while redshirt senior defensive back Tyler Geiman (Zion, Ill. / Zion-Benton Township) garnered the team’s Hammer Hit Award.

The program has also announced the following Scout Team Players of the Week – redshirt freshman Justin Jurmu (Marquette, Mich. / Marquette) for offense, redshirt freshman Aaron Larkins Jr. (Plainfield, Ill. / Plainfield Central) for defense and redshirt freshman Alex Goworowski (Chicago, Ill. / Saint Patrick) for special teams.

Davis had his best game in a Beacon uniform and the best day by a Valpo wide receiver since 2014 in Saturday’s game against the Red Foxes, making 10 catches for 175 yards and two touchdowns, all career highs. His receiving yard accumulation was the third highest by any FCS player nationally in a game so far this season.

Kessen picked up the third blocked kick of his collegiate career, rejecting a PAT try in the final minute that would have given Marist the lead. He also made six tackles including 0.5 tackles for loss. Butler had three kickoff returns for 91 yards including a long of 48.

Valpo will be back in action on Saturday at 1 p.m. against Southwest Minnesota State at Brown Field for the final nonconference game of the season.
