Valpo Football Announces Week 8 Team Awards

The Valparaiso University football program has announced its team awards for Week 8 of the season following this past weekend’s contest at Davidson.

Redshirt freshman quarterback Rowan Keefe (Park Ridge, Ill. / Maine South) has been named the team’s Offensive Player of the Week, while sophomore defensive lineman Onye Nwosisi (Indianapolis, Ind. / Cardinal Ridge [Muskingum]) has earned the team’s Defensive Player of the Week nod. In addition, redshirt senior return specialist Jashon Butler (Lynwood, Wash. / Meadowdale [Arizona]) was selected as team Special Teams Player of the Week and senior linebacker Mohamed Kamara (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Kalamazoo Central [Hope]) was recognized with the Hammer Hit Award.

The team has also honored the following Scout Team Players of the Week – redshirt freshman Alex Goworowski (Chicago, Ill. / Saint Patrick) on offense, freshman Gus Wenning (Cross Plains, Wis. / Middleton) on defense and redshirt freshman Matt Molnar (Avon Lake, Ohio / Saint Edward) on special teams.

Keefe entered the game at halftime and completed nine of his 12 pass attempts for 187 yards, tossing three touchdowns and no interceptions. He completed two passes of 60+ yards, becoming the first Valpo player to do so in a single game since 2013. Prior to Keefe’s entrance, Valpo had just one passing play of 60+ yards in the program’s previous 44 games, and the rookie completed two such passes in his first half of collegiate football.

Butler had a 68-yard kickoff return, his longest of the season and his third of 60+ yards this year. He has four kickoff returns of 50+ yards this season, becoming the first Valpo player to do that in over two decades. Nwosisi had six tackles including three solos, two tackles for loss and a sack in addition to notching a fumble recovery.

The Beacons return to the gridiron this week for the Hoosier Helmet rivalry game on Saturday at noon CT in Indianapolis. The game will be broadcast on FloFootball.
