Valpo Football Announces Week 10 Team Awards

The Valparaiso University football program has announced its team awards for Week 10 of the season following this past weekend’s 21-7 victory over Dayton at Brown Field.

Also named the Pioneer Football League Special Teams Player of the Week, sixth-year senior punter Evan Matthes (Reston, Va. / South Lake [West Virginia]) was tabbed the team’s Special Teams Player of the Week. He was joined in earning team awards by Ryan Mann (Vernon Hills, Ill. / Vernon Hills (Northern Illinois) on offense and Sam Hafner (Green Bay, Wis. / De Pere) on defense. Mann also achieved the team’s Hammer Hit award.

The following Beacons were recognized as Scout Team Players of the Week – Alton McCullum (Oliver Springs, Tenn. / Warren De La Salle) on offense, Justin Jurmu (Marquette, Mich. / Marquette) on defense and Nicholas Lendino (Naperville, Ill. / Neuqua Valley) on special teams.

Matthes averaged 41.7 yards per punt on seven attempts with a long of 53, pinning five of his seven boots inside the 20 including three inside the 10 and two inside the 5. Matthes leads the PFL and ranks 18th nationally in punting average at 42.8. Mann missed the first half with a back injury before battling back for a second-half return, accruing 11 carries for 68 yards. He also had two catches for 34 yards. Hafner boasted eight tackles including two tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks.

The Beacons will be back in action on Saturday for Senior Day against Stetson at noon at Brown Field.
