While this year’s Valparaiso men’s basketball team is looking to make history next week as it takes aim at its first Horizon League championship, the Crusaders will also take time to honor a special team from their past. Valpo will honor the 1961-1962 men’s basketball team, which is celebrating the 50th anniversary of becoming the first team in program history to make the NCAA postseason, ultimately advancing to the national quarterfinals, at halftime of the Butler game next Friday, Feb. 24.

Valparaiso takes its final step outside of league play during the regular season on Friday evening, as the Crusaders fly to Los Angeles to face off against Loyola Marymount as part of the Sears BracketBusters X series. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. CST Friday night, and the game will be televised live on ESPNU, the second consecutive year Valpo has been chosen for a televised BracketBusters appearance.

Valparaiso hit eight of its nine 3-point attempts in the second half, including triples on three straight possessions in the closing minutes to claim the lead for good, in a 74-65 victory over UIC Tuesday evening at the Athletics-Recreation Center.

Valparaiso returns home to the ARC in first place and will close out the Horizon League slate with a trio of home games, starting with a matchup against UIC Tuesday evening at 7:05 p.m.

A 16-0 first-half run by Youngstown State proved to be too much for Valparaiso to overcome on Saturday evening, as the Crusaders dropped a 71-53 decision in Horizon League play to the Penguins.

First-place Valparaiso closes out its Horizon League road schedule on Saturday evening as the Crusaders look to stay atop the league standings with a showdown at Youngstown State. The Crusaders have won 14 straight meetings with the Penguins, including 10 consecutive since joining the Horizon League.

Playing on the road in a first-place showdown Thursday night in Cleveland, Ohio, Valparaiso surrendered the first point of the game to Cleveland State. Valpo then scored 17 straight over the next eight minutes to seize control for good, and the lead never dropped into single digits the rest of the way, as the Crusaders came out of the Wolstein Center with a 59-41 victory and atop the Horizon League standings.
